        about the rally monkey

       BORN: June 6th, 2000
       GAME VS: San Francisco Giants
ORIGIN: With the Angels trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning of a game against the
San Francisco Giants (June 6, 2000), the Angels’ game presentation staff
spontaneously created the Rally Monkey phenomenon. Here’s how:
The entertainment staff members had a video clip of a monkey jumping
up and down in their stock footage and, on the spur of the moment,
decided to put the words “Rally Monkey” over the clip and show it on
the Jumbotron. After showing the clip, the Angels rallied for a run, so the
clip was shown again when the Angels were up in the seventh and eighth
innings. In the ninth inning, with the Giants ahead, 5-4, the Giants brought
in their closer Robb Nen. The Rally Monkey clip was repeated several
more times in the ninth and the Angels rallied to beat the Giants, 6-5.
RULES: Rally Monkey etiquette requires that the video is only displayed in the
sixth-inning-or-later with the game tied or the Angels behind.
