◆ 2026 marks first season as Angels pitching coach, and 24th as a coach at the Major League level...
Spent 2023-25 as the Rangers pitching coach in his second stint with the team; Won 2023 World
Series with Rangers and led Texas’ pitching staff to an MLB-best 3.47 ERA in 2025...Was the
pitching coach for 33 of 34 postseason wins in Washington/Texas franchise history across two
stints with the Rangers.
◆ Served as the Cardinals pitching coach from 2018-22; team had the sixth-lowest team ERA (3.85)
in MLB (second-lowest in N.L.) during his tenure...In each of his last four seasons with St. Louis, the
Cardinals advanced to the playoffs, winning N.L. Central Division titles in 2019 and 2022.
◆ In two seasons as the Nationals pitching coach from 2016-17, the Nationals ranked fourth in MLB
(third in N.L.) with a 3.69 ERA...Nationals RHP Max Scherzer won the N.L. Cy Young Award in both
seasons.
◆ Embarked on first stint as Rangers pitching coach from 2009-15...His staffs posted two of the
three highest single-season shutout totals in Washington/Texas franchise history (19 in 2011; 17
in 2014)…2013 Rangers posted a 3.62 ERA, the lowest in franchise history since 1983 (team-record
3.31) and set a club record for relief ERA (2.91)…The 2011 Texas rotation featured 5 starters with
at least 13 wins, the first A.L. team to accomplish the feat since 1977.
◆ Was the Brewers pitching coach from 2003-08...The Brewers staff posted a 3.85 ERA in his final
season in 2008, the fourth-lowest in MLB (second-lowest in N.L.), and advanced to the playoffs for
the first time in 26 years.
◆ Began coaching career as the pitching coach for Astros affiliate, Double-A Round Rock from 2000-
02...Advanced to the Texas League playoffs all three seasons.
PLAYING CAREER & MISC
◆ Compiled a 39-37 record and 4.05 ERA (861.2 IP - 388 ER) and 564 strikeouts across 15 Major
League seasons with the Phillies (1986-1989), Dodgers (1990, 1999), Padres (1991-1992), Mets
(1993-1994), Pirates (1995), Red Sox (1995-1996), Mariners (1997), Expos (1998-1999), and Astros
(2000)...Made at least 50 appearances in five seasons, including each year from 1991-1993 when
he compiled a 12-12 record and 2.77 ERA (253.1 IP - 78 ER) with 174 strikeouts.
◆ Originally selected by Cincinnati in 36th round of 1979 June Amateur Draft and by the Philadelphia
Phillies in the fifth round of the 1982 Draft.
◆ Attended University of Texas at El Paso; Is the third player from UTEP to make the Majors.
◆ Older brother of Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux.
